The USGS publishes maps in many different scales, though the majority of USGS published topographic maps are in the 1:24,000/1:25,000-scale map series. This series is also known as the 7.5-minute map series because these maps generally each cover a single geographic quadrangle bounded by 7.5 minutes of latitude and 7.5 minutes of longitude.
CSU Stanislaus also has a collection of California Topographic maps in the 15-minute map series (1:62,500 scale). Each of these 15-minute maps covers an area equivalent to that covered by 4 maps in the 7.5-minute series, but with correspondingly less detail. The 15-minute series is no longer available from the USGS, which is why the information listed for these maps in the CSUS online map index is less complete than for the 7.5-minute series.
Some of this his information is adapted from the USGS Online Map Lists Help Page.
